What’s Next for the Dáil?

We’ve been discussing what should be the focus for the Dáil and the Government at the start of 2013. So we thought we’d throw the question open and ask you. Please tell us what you think.

The EU Presidency is not a legislative matter; so there is no role for the Dáil, except calling Ministers to account for their Stewardship.

However, there is a big gap in the legislative functionality of the Dáil. Mush of our positive law is now coming from EU directives which are transposed into Statutory Instruments. There is leeway here for tailoring to Irish needs. But, as I understand it, the Oireachtas does not oversee this legislative work. It ought to.

Promissory Notes should be a priority IMO from which should flow at least some attempt to deal with personal debt issues which for many are all the more brutal in their effect given the taxation policies and budget cuts to low income/no income families.

The Anglo Debt (ie.promissory notes) should be top priorty for the government within the coming months as a payment of 3.1billion is due by march 31st. The government should settle for no less than a substantial write down or complete write off not an extension of the payment over 30 years etc…

  Enda kenny went on tv last year and told the irish citizens the bank and bond holders debts were not their debts, He then stands up in the dail and tell the nation we will pay all our debts as we dont want defaulter written on our fore heads, WHAT sort of message does that send out to the banks and bond holders who gambled on the irish banks, when the leader of this bankrupt failed state makes contradictory remarks like i have described. WE need strong leadership to deal with the bank debt issues and with the present yes frau merkcal whatever you say attitude of our spineless govt we are all destined for the poor house unless action is taken. THE political classes have socialized the capitalists gambling debts without the citizens consent. it has to be unconstitutional and a case is before the high court in the end of jan.

Ya see, if they could create jobs everything else would sort itself out, but lets face it, they have to pay their wages and the pensions of those gone before them first! Or more to the point we the tax payers have to!

Job creation has to be the priority. Every person going from the live register to paid employment reduces state spending and increases state revenue. It is, quite simply, a mathematical fact.

Promissory Notes – Have not seen anything in the German media showing how their bankers profited in commssion from recklessly giving massive loans to private Developers via private Irish banks – many have not paid back the loans – and the taxpayer is supposed to be liable – but you know all this!!

Prepare legislation/referendum (whatever is needed) to lower/curb obscene salaries and pensions for Irish bank and state body CEO’s, executives and politicians. Legislate also to negate/clawback pensions for those found to have performed incompetently/inappropriately while in office. Why is this issue always swept under the carpet and ignored when the government could save millions and earn back some badly needed trust and confidence from the taxpayer.

Making law abiding irish citizens pay a property tax they cannot afford will be the straw that breaks the camels back. Taking from their wages money they use to pay their mortgage will put anyone clinging on under. Never mind septic tank and water charges , the well is bone dry.

Focus should be on job creation. There needs to be a relentless campaign to reduce the cost base in Ireland. Cost of doing business and creating employment are being restricted by continuing high costs. Senior public servants, professionals and semi-state bodies should all be forced to lower their incomes thus reducing costs to the exchequer and consumers.

Stay focused on dealing with ongoing budget deficit in a fair and meaningful way. Start at the top by cutting salaries of President, Taoiseach, Ministers, TDs etc. Nobody in public sector/state bodies should be on over €100k. Leave the lower paid untouched. Abolish all pension payments to public servants under the retiremant age and reduce current pensions to reflect lower pay rates. Refuse to pay back any private (ie bank) debts to EU and face down their implicit threats to cut off our banks. Work with the IMF if possible. Initiate legal proceedings against individuals who actively worked against the interests of the state, starting with the bankers who lied to ministers about the dire state of their balance sheets. Bring in new legislation to facilitate this if necesary. Stop the introduction of two-tier salaries in teaching and nursing that is being brought in with the connivance of unions for their own selfish reasons. Not only would the above help the budget situation but might also go a long way to stopping any social rift. We are all in tis together so lets stop protecting the “untouchables”.

Have to sort out the property tax inequities as this is the biggest grouse the electorate will have.

Sort out the attacks on respite. Ditch the Croke park agreement and get public service pay under control. Job creation!!! no government ever created a wealth creating job. Default on the debt and see if Europe blinks…it will.
