November 26th, 2015- Stephen Donnelly, Social Democrats TD for Wicklow and East Carlow, has welcomed the announcement that Lidl have decided not to continue the sale of premises to McDonalds and will instead pursue other plans.
The store, which was set to be constructed right beside three schools, had been the subject of a number of legal challenges and an organised campaign by local people and schools.
Speaking on the announcement today in Greystones, Deputy Donnelly stated:
‘I am delighted that the building will not go ahead, and commend all involved for their actions. Last week I wrote to Wicklow’s schools as ask for their support in this fight, and have been inundated with positive responses.
‘Temple Carrig School’s decision to take the challenge further is a real indicator of how seriously this was taken by the local people. While I have no problem with McDonald’s coming to Greystones, its placement so close to the schools was not appropriate. The next step is for the County Development Plan to be changed, then reflected in all Local Area Plans, so that this sort of proposal cannot happen again.’
