How local is the Local Property Tax?

In the debate on the Local Property Tax, Minister Noonan deconstructed the name of the tax. While I accept that it is a tax on property, I’m not so sure about the local bit. I used my own situation to illustrate this. I won’t have to pay the local property tax, even though I use the facilities in my area. Why? Because I rent my house. There are many other elements of this bill that are problematic – and this speech from the last debate on the bill illustrates some of them.

  • The Family Home Tax is:-

    – not a property tax because land, including farms, is excluded.
    – not a wealth tax because I cannot get a revenue stream from my home to pay the tax.
    – not an asset tax because I cannot liquidate it or part of it to pay the tax.

It is a State Landlord Tax-Rent on citizens who are being treated as peasant tenants and tax fodder.
